    Capitol Reef Stage Race

Is this a misprint?  Are the race days for this race really Friday and Saturday?

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

Normally this wouldn't bother me too much. One Fri-Sat stage deal per year isn't a bad thing -- probably a good thing considering our local uniqueness.

But with the race being a long drive away from the 801 and having a 9 a.m. start Friday morning this is going to convince a lot of people to just skip this one.

You'd have to do Thur-Sat away from home and race againt 10 people in your field.

If, in the future, a Fri-Sat stage race is held, let's try having it closer to SLC and start it with the TT or Crit/Circuit on Friday evening with two races on Saturday. You gotta make these things less complicated to get a big turnout.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

If a stage race includes Friday, it should be Friday-Sunday.  Friday-Saturday, with a long drive is just begging for a low turnout.

I'm pretty excited about the Fri/Sat.  It'll be the first stage race I've ever finished.

I think it is a great idea.  I'll be there.

A link on the site to register would be nice.

Did i miss something? I can't find a race bible. I am not familiar with this area at all and an elevation map would be nice to see what i am in for.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

there are links, route descriptions, directions and all sorts of stuff on the site.

    http://cycleutah.com/Event.aspx?id=702

Click the link on the calendar and be amazed at the info you run across.

As much as it would be nice for the UCA to walk us through everything despite it not being their job to do so, it really is not that hard to find information.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

Are you kidding me, here's the official description for the road stage from the website you linked:

100 miler start will begin on SR-24 in Torrey. Route travels west on SR-24, traveling through Bicknell and Lyman. Turning right onto 1100 East, route rides through Fremont then turns left onto SR-25 at the Mill Meadows Reservoir turn. Travel north-west on SR-25 up the mountain to Johnson Reservoir and pass Fish Lake to the junction of SR-25/SR-24, turn left onto SR-24 heading back to Wayne County. Ride through Loa heading south onto the airport road pass Big Rocks to SR-24 junction. Turn right onto SR-24 travel through Bicknell, heading towards Torrey. Route turns right onto the Teasdale Road traveling south through Teasdale, and continues on to SR-12. A left turn will be made onto SR-12 heading northwest to the SR-12/SR-24 junction. At the junction turn left onto SR-24 and ride into Torrey to the Start/Finish.

Is the course flat, does it have a monster climb? Do you bring the TT bike or is the time trial a hillclimb? Sure we can go to Google maps, enter the road info, extract elevation data and plot the course profile. But this description looks like it was written by someone who's never ridden a bike race. Yeah, lots of links on the calendar page but the previous posters are right on target there is scant information concerning this race and its courses.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

1: You're right. Elevation profiles would be a huge help.

2: I tried to plot the courses myself on the computer and even the descriptions provided are lacking real detail. But the TT looked like it had about 300 feet of total climbing -- assuming I went along the correct roads.

3: This is a new race. It's probably being promoted by new people who have not promoted a race before. It will be a learning experience for them, too. They certainly could be doing a better job supplying info. But has anyone contacted them for that info?

4: Being less than three weeks away, it's looking like it will be pretty small fields if I had to guess simply based on location and days of the week. Which is too bad. It'd be nice to see a stage race like this succeed. I hope it does.

5: I emailed the promoterss asking for a race bible with course maps and elevation profiles. If/when it's supplied, I'll post the info here.

Just curious as to why you cant finish a stage race if it ends on Sunday.

    LOL

For the same reason you need a "membership" to have a drink here.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

It's really not a question of 'can't' finish. It's a matter of chosing not to race on that day.

To each their own. If someone doesn't want to race on Sunday for whatever reason, that really shouldn't matter, should it?

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

No, but having to miss two days of work instead of one is a little too tangible (more work=more money=food on the table and bills paid) of a concept for me to grasp a hold of......oh well.....looks like second fiddle again to the intangible.....alas...the good ole days of racing on Sunday...oh how I miss thee...or is it thou?

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

I agree that the travel day on thursday will be a pain for most and will cause a lot of people to opt out of the race. I really wish a race with this format would be closer to SLC. I think then you'd see much better turnout.

As for racing on Sunday, you had High Uintas, Gate City and Triple Valley to get your fix.

So that's three of four UCA stage races with Sat-Sun schedules. One with a Fri-Sat schedule shouldn't be too hard to swallow. If you can't make it for the obvious reasons you stated -- two days off of work is tough, real tough, for most of us -- there is the Sundance Hillclimb the same week.

    Re: Capitol Reef Stage Race

Ask and ye shall receive, I guess.

I emailed the race promoter and they said the website person was supposed to post the profiles and maps a long time ago. They sent my copies of everything.

If anyone wants copies, I'm happy to forward them.
